In addition to designing the app, I lead the way for UI and functionality, with design being the first driving force behind how the app would be implemented (and essentially how to make it possible). To date, the app has been downloaded nearly 10-million times, with about 100,000 downloads every week.
My pride in the app is the overall design, and the ability to have created something that seems very simple to the user, but in reality is created of a ton of separate images “faked” to look like the real thing.
How it was done:
digital video–I filmed the flame, edited down footage to the most desirable footage, took still-frames from said footage and tweaked several to appear as if they were from the same flame
Photoshop gallore–assets were given for the lighter bodies, which I then resized and spliced to match up as closely with one another as possible
digital photography–I carefully photographed a lighter “grill” to sit behind all lighter bodies to achieve the look of real lighters
collaboration–I worked closely with engineers to create images that could be manipulated for simulating the look and feel of a real lighter (coming up with creative ideas of how to make the lid open, and flames flicker around)
design–I created all graphical elements and components that make up the app, including filming and photographing flames and Zippo lighters
UI design–I worked with the Product Manager and Engineering team to create the UI
digital video–I created a demo video (filmed, edited, storyboarded and directed)
